Hannah Fasick just can’t seem to get enough of USTA League tennis and is a self-described tennis nut who plays five times a week. She captains one mixed doubles team, as well as playing on another, and also lends her skills to a women’s team for this upcoming season.

“If they don’t see me at the club, they call me and say, ‘Where are you?’ ” joked Fasick, who plays all of her tennis out of the popular Toluca Lake Tennis & Fitness Club.

The Beachwood Canyon resident Fasick captained the recently completed 18+ 8.0 Mixed League the Toluca Lake Lobstahs, as well as playing on the Toluca Lake 18+ Team Singles – All the Single Ladies. She will play singles and doubles for the Toluca Lake Swans 18+ 4.0 Women’s team this spring season.

Fasick can’t pick a favorite between singles and doubles. “I love them both,” she said. “In singles it’s all your responsibility and in doubles you really rely on your partner. In doubles I like to play the net and crush the ball. I hit pretty hard, so it’s fun to play with the men, as well as the women.”

Fasick, who after winning the qualifying tournament, represented SoCal this year in USTA Individual Nationals, has been praised by USTA SoCal Adult Tennis Competition Manager Anthony Shirley for her exceptional sportsmanship.

A writer and director, Fasick was asked what sportsmanship means to her and why Shirley nominated her for an article about the topic. “I would think it is because Anthony and I have had a few conversations at singles tournaments after some super close matches that I won,” she said. “I feel like I’ve been involved in some matches that represented the best of what USTA Leagues stand for with both players elevating their game and bringing their best out of one another, which is what I always hope to do.”

Fasick said as a captain, she has adopted a document called “The Code” put out by the USTA, which encourages players to be kind and polite competitors. “That is really important to me and that brings out everybody’s best tennis,” she said.

She continued: “It really comes down to respect for your opponents’ game and what that looks like, like not grunting, which is actually a hindrance according to the USTA. Calling balls on the line in, and applauding your opponent when they hit a good shot. I think also giving your opponent the benefit of the doubt. The leagues are deeply competitive. It can bring out the best and worst of people and that’s why sportsmanship is so important because you are setting an example for others to follow.”
