EARLY DEVELOPMENT CAMPS

USTA Southern California Early Development Camps are the first step in the USTA Player Development Pathway. Our goal is to bring together SoCal 10 & under players, who currently compete in Junior Circuit tournaments in order to practice and play together. Early Development Camps are developed and designed by the USTA High Performance Player Development and utilize local USTA trained coaches.

This two-day camp emphasizes fundamentals and overall athletic development in a fun, educational environment while giving players an opportunity to earn PlayTracker points through match play. Players with excellent work ethic, commitment, talent, and attitude are encouraged to participate.

The next Early Development Camp is on September 28-29 at Marina High School in Huntington Beach.

Additional EDCs will be held October 12-13 at the Claremont Club and December 14-15 at Barnes Tennis Center.

ENHANCEMENT TO THE WORLD TENNIS NUMBER ALGORITHM CALCULATION

You may have noticed earlier this month a change to your WTN. This enhancement to the WTN algorithm repositioned cohorts of players on the current scale of 40-1, particularly with regard to different age groups. While your number was likely adjusted, movement relative to your peers in your own age groups should have been similar if you play regularly.

The full press release can be found HERE.

DIFFERENCES IN DRAW TYPES

Did you know there’s a difference in ranking points between the different types of draws? HERE is the link to the USTA points tables. Make sure the table you’re reading corresponds to the draw you’re looking at.

  • Full Feed-In Through the Round of 16 (FIC-R16): Continue to feed into consolation through the round of 16.
  • Full Feed-in Through the Quarterfinals (FIC-QF): Continue to feed into consolation through the quarterfinals.
  • First Match Losers Consolation (FMLC):  Player losing their first match automatically feeds into consolation. Players who receive a first round bye then lose in the second round will be fed into consolation.
  • First Round Losers Consolation (FRLC): Player losing in the first round of the draw automatically feeds into consolation.
  • Modified Feed-in Consolation (MFC or MFIC): Usually a small draw. Losers in the first and second round move into consolation.
  • Voluntary Consolation (VC): Available to first match losers only. Optional to play, must sign up in advance.
  • Round Robin (RR): Small draw, usually five players or less who all play each other.
  • Single Elimination (SE): One and done.

Officials

USTA SOCAL RULE FOR USTA SOCAL SANCTIONED TOURNAMENTS – 3RD OVERRULE (2 SUSPENSION POINTS)

If a player is overruled by one or more officials three times, the player may receive a code violation (point penalty) for unsportsmanlike conduct on the third overrule.

Subsequent overrules will result in additional code violations (game penalty for the 4th overrule then default for the 5th overrule).

ULTIMATE SPORTSMANSHIP CHALLENGE

From May 11, 2024 through February 23, 2025, during the Ultimate Sportsmanship Challenge, USTA Southern California will use Match Tennis App to promote good behavior from players during tournaments. The purpose of this nomination and award system is to reward players who exhibit exemplary sportsmanship, with the ultimate goal of creating a more positive and respectful tournament environment for all participants.

Join in the Ultimate Sportsmanship Challenge and vote for those specific players to earn prizes, including limited edition bag tags, Stanley Tumblers, gift cards, and a chance to win the Grand Prize, a trip for two to the 2025 BNP Paribas Open (two awarded). OTHER INFORMATION

DOUBLE ENTRIES: Players are not permitted to enter two tournaments at the same time. When entries close, a player shall not be entered in two or more sanctioned tournaments, if any part of the tournament sanction dates overlap (once you have been selected for a tournament, you are committed to finishing out that tournament and you cannot enter another tournament). After a player has been eliminated from a tournament whose schedule of play partially overlaps with that of a second tournament, the player may enter the second tournament.

If you are an alternate for another tournament, you MUST remove yourself from that alternate list once you are accepted into another tournament. Players who violate this rule will be disqualified from both tournaments (applies to SoCal tournaments only) and will receive four (4) suspension points. (USTA Regulations IV.F.)

– BECOME AN OFFICIAL: We are looking for more people to become certified officials. If you’re interested, please start HERE.

NEED HELP PAYING ENTRY FEES? Please email Ai Takamori at USTA Southern California and we’ll try to help you! Player must be free of suspension points and grievances to receive assistance.
