Notable information from Thursday at the SoCal Pro Series tournament at the University of San Diego:
Three San Diego County Players Advance to Friday’s Men’s Singles Quarterfinals
No. 6 seed Keegan Smith – a San Diego native, 2017 Point Loma High School graduate and 2019 NCAA Division I men’s doubles champion with UCLA – squandered a couple of match points in the second set, then rallied from 2-5 down in the third set to pull out a 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (0) win in Thursday’s second round over Floridian and University of Virginia product Gianni Ross.
Smith is joined in Friday’s men’s singles quarterfinals by Rancho Santa Fe native and 2017 Torrey Pines High School graduate Jacob Brumm and San Diego native and Pacific Beach resident Trevor Svajda, with the latter two set to duel on Friday. Brumm rallied to overcome Orange County native and Big-12 Freshman of the Year Sebastian Gorzny (TCU), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Svajda, a 17-year-old qualifier, has emerged as the tournament’s most pleasant surprise as he registered a 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 5 seed and University of Utah product Daniel Little, of Great Britain, to earn his second career ATP Tour ranking point.
Nakashima Bests Brumm in Men’s Doubles Quarterfinal
Ohio State-bound San Diego resident Bryce Nakashima, a SoCal Pro Series doubles champion last week in Rancho Santa Fe, teamed with University of Michigan player Bjorn Swenson to oust last year’s SoCal Pro Series doubles champion at USD, Brumm, and Chilean Matias Soto, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 (third-set tiebreaker) in a Thursday quarterfinal.
2023 NCAA Division I Women’s Singles Champion Fangran Tian Beats UCLA Teammate, Then Wins With Her
Torrance resident and UCLA sophomore Kimmi Hance couldn’t beat her teammate, so then she joined her for a women’s doubles quarterfinal victory on Thursday. 2023 NCAA Division I women’s singles national champion Fangran Tian, 19, downed Hance, 6-1, 6-1 in the second round of women’s singles. Later in the afternoon, the UCLA freshman and Hance, who was named to the Pac-12 Women’s Doubles Team of the Year in 2023, teamed up to breeze past San Diego resident Alyssa Ahn, 16, and Jessica Bernales, 6-0, 6-3, to advance to Friday’s women’s doubles semifinals against Pepperdine University junior Nikki Redelijk and Redondo Beach resident Taylor Johnson.
