Carlsbad’s Katie Codd and Santa Barbara’s Masato Perera looked impressive on stadium court at the International Open of Southern California on Sunday. Codd rolled through a routine 6-2, 6-1 win over #10 Sophie Llewellyn (Florida) to reach Monday’s main draw. The 2020 Newport Beach champion, Codd is among the most highly recruited college prospects in the nation, attracting interest from powerhouse programs such as Princeton, Stanford, and UCLA.
Qualifier top seed Gracie Epps (Okla.) was upset on Sunday, falling to #9 Karsyn Evans (Texas) in overtime. Evans locked up the victory with a gutsy 5-7, 7-6, 10-8 win to move into Monday’s main draw. It’s the second time Evans has gone the distance with Epps this year – the two met in Cancun in February, where Evans was the eventual champion.
Masato Perera (Santa Barbara) outlasted Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice (Tecate) in an excellent display of competitive tennis. Perera, a Woody Hunt and Long Beach L2 finalist in 2020, went the distance in a 6-1, 5-7, 10-2 win on Sunday.
Sebastian Gorzny, a SoCal favorite now training out of Florida, notched a routine win over #6 Sasha Rozin (CAN) to advance. Gorzny, a former SoCal Junior Sectionals champion, was a finalist in Las Vegas last week.
In other qualifier results, NorCal’s John Kim overcame a slow start then squeaked out a second set before emerging from a tiebreaker to advance 2-6, 7-6, 11-9 over Dylan Charlap. Qualifier top seed Nicholas Godsick (Ohio) won the first set 7-5 then advanced when opponent Michael Ross (S.C.) retired with a leg injury. Nathan Cox (La.) advanced in dominant fashion 6-0, 6-1 over Hudson Beaudoin (N.Y.), while Emon van Loben Sels (Calif.) outlasted San Diego’s Bryce Nakashima.
In the Girls qualifier, #12 Jingyi Li (CHN) cruised in her advancing match with #4 Sophie Williams (N.C.), winning 6-2, 6-1. Ahmani Guichard (Florida) was in complete control of her 6-1, 6-3 win over Kathryn Treiber (Ill.), and Mary Stoiana (Conn.) moved on with a 6-2, 6-1 victory opposite Salma Farhat (Wash.). Elizabeth Jones (Mich.) locked into high gear during her second set, as the #8 seed completed her advancing win over Lamija Avdic (Wash.), 6-4, 6-0.
