USTA SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
Get in the Game!
USTA Southern California works and collaborates with providers throughout the section who host instructional, social, and competitive wheelchair tennis programs that reflect the enduring vitality of SoCal’s vibrant wheelchair tennis community. These programs provide an opportunity for all athletes to get on the court and experience the recreational and competitive nature of tennis.
USTA Southern California has been a key supporter of wheelchair tennis, offering numerous programs and events across the section.
The USTA is committed to offering exceptional programming and developmental opportunities for wheelchair athletes of all ages and backgrounds. With sectional and national tournaments, the USTA introduced gender-neutral divisions in 2021 to promote level-based play for all.
Wheelchair tennis provides kids with disabilities a chance to stay active with family and friends while benefiting from the sport. The USTA offers a full pathway for wheelchair athletes, from youth and high school (Net Generation) to collegiate and international competition, including the Paralympics and UNIQLO Wheelchair Tour.
Orange County’s Brad Parks, the visionary behind wheelchair tennis competition, pioneered the game’s development. SoCal native Jason Harnett leads the way as Team USA Wheelchair Tennis National Manager, while San Diego Paralympian Dana Mathewson stands as one of the country’s most celebrated athletes. Fullerton’s David Wagner holds the distinction of being the first ITF Quad Wheelchair World Champion, earning the No. 1 ranking eight times. La Quinta’s Charlie Cooper continues to inspire as the No. 1 junior wheelchair player in the United States.
The USTA’s All-Comers Wheelchair Tennis Camps are national and sectional programs designed to provide instruction, coaching, and raise awareness for wheelchair tennis for all ages.
Each camp welcomes 15-25 participants from across the country, ages 12 and older, of all skill levels. The camps are open to individuals with permanent disabilities that require the use of a wheelchair for sports. Participants receive on-court training from USTA National-level wheelchair coaches and world-ranked players, offering a high-quality instructional experience.
Sports chairs and racquets are available upon request, and camp fees can be prorated, allowing attendees the flexibility to participate in all or part of the camp. Additionally, able-bodied professionals interested in learning about wheelchair tennis are welcome to observe. While able-bodied players may participate, priority will be given to athletes with disabilities
