Following the conclusion of the 2024 USTA Adult League season, the Adult League National Championships kicked off during the third weekend of October. Providing the opportunity for players to compete against the best talent in the nation, Nationals hosts representative teams from all 17 sections to battle it out in championship events. The teams competing had no easy path to make it to this stage, having to first win their local league, before outlasting all other respective league winners in their section during the Sectional Championships.

National Championship events range from 2.5 to 5.0 on the NTRP scale and feature play in the 18 & Over, 40 & Over, 55 & Over and Mixed divisions. These events are held across five cities across California, Arizona and Florida over the span of four consecutive weekends.

USTA Southern California is extremely proud to have 36 teams advance to Nationals, and we congratulate all participants on their dedication, perseverance, and talent that helped them reach this stage.

Claiming five National Championships over the four week stretch, the Southern California section ranks third among all USTA Adult League sections that participated. Just as remarkable, more than 40% of teams hailing from SoCal placed within the top-four of their division at Nationals.

RESULTS & TOP SOCAL TEAMS

WEEKEND #2: OCTOBER 25-27, 2024

— Women’s 18 & Over 3.5 — 2nd Place

With the first top-four finish of any Southern California team at Nationals, Orange County’s “Laguna Angels” secured second place in the 3.5 division of Women’s 18 & Over. Within rounders, the squad led by Elyzabeth Pham and Genesis Arreola was impressive, ending their play with a 3-1 record. Here, they picked up wins  over teams from Southwest, New England and Missouri Valley, all of which ended in clean sweeps of 5-0. With the fourth best record among all teams in terms of team and individual score, the Laguna Angels advanced to the playoffs where they would face the top-seeded team from Northern California. Upsetting their same-state foes with a final of 4-1, Pham and Arreola’s bunch advanced to the finals, where they were closely defeated by Florida in a score of 3-2.

“If I had to say anything about this SoCal team, the ladies have grit,” Pham stated. “Our team name is Laguna Angels, because we are from Laguna Niguel Racquet Club, and I start all of my messages with “Hello Angels,” channeling Charlie’s Angels. However this time around, it felt like the angels were looking out for us. That, and I have some terrific players on the team. Props to Tom, India and the tournament staff who ran a tight ship. The officials were there when you needed them and everything ran so smoothly and on time.”

— Women’s 40 & Over 3.0 — 1st Place

Taking home the first National Championship of the 2024 season for team SoCal, Meredith Levine and Jo Ann Thrailkill’s bunch from San Fernando Valley clinched first place in the 3.0 division of Women’s 40 & Over. Dominating the competition within the round robin, the SFV ladies bested teams from Missouri Valley, Intermountain, Texas and Southwest. Earning their spot as the No. 2 seed entering playoffs, SoCal was matched up with the team from Northern California, who also entered the playoffs as undefeated. In a second interstate playoff showdown, SoCal would once again prevail, winning the match by a score of 3-2. In the finals, it was another battle of undefeated teams, as SoCal would face another tough task against the team from Middle States. Etching their name into the history books, SFV capped off their monumental weekend with a 4-1 victory, earning them the distinction of champions.

“Our team finished second at Sectionals after a battle with Orange County,” Levine shared. “When we found out Orange County didn’t have enough players to field a team to go to Nationals, the SoCal bid was ours, and we had the second chance of a lifetime! This team is dedicated, talented, kind and driven. They know how to pull out a “W” on the court, and the 95-degree Scottsdale heat couldn’t stop them! Jo Ann and I could not be more proud of the San Fernando Volley Girls and are thrilled to hang our banner at Burbank Tennis Center!”

— Women’s 40 & Over 4.0 — 4th Place

The third Orange County team to place over the weekend, Julie Mak’s “Classy on the Court” walked away from the 4.0 Women’s 40 & Over Nationals with a fourth place finish. Making quick work of their first four opponents in rounders, the OC ladies went undefeated with victories over teams from the Caribbean, Texas, Hawaii and Northern sections. With a tough playoff draw, SoCal nearly fell to teams from Florida and Midwest, ending their weekend as a top-four team.

“My team had an amazing experience this past weekend at Nationals at the USTA National Campus this year,” shared Mak. “We wouldn’t have had the opportunity to visit this ginormous tennis complex, if not for USTA Nationals. Traveling to these events gave us first hand experience as to the life of professional tennis players. It was a great weekend of competitive tennis, camaraderie with the team and a fun girls trip to boot. Going into Nationals, we were cautiously optimistic on our results, as I know it’s hard to win Nationals or even place in the top four in the nation. We’re extremely proud to represent Southern California. Our “Classy on the Court” girls battled and played our hearts out, and we feel privileged to take the number four spot.”

— Women’s 40 & Over 4.5 — 4th Place

Earning a fourth place in the 4.5 division of Women’s 40 & Over Nationals, Los Angeles’ “Slay All Day” captured the fourth top-4 placement among SoCal teams. Led by April Hartstein, the ladies from LA secured a 3-1 record within the round robin, with their victories coming against teams from the Southwest, Intermountain and Hawaii sections. Earning a spot as the No. 4 seed in the playoffs, LA was defeated by a score of 3-2 against teams from the Southern and Mid-Atlantic sections, ending their weekend in fourth place.

“As this was my first trip to Nationals, I really didn’t know what to expect as a Captain or a player. I immediately saw many similarities to our SoCal sectionals events, but with more intensity,” captain Hartstein said. “Though SoCal sectionals are always very competitive, stakes are even higher at Nationals and have the added challenge that the competition is completely unknown.  Our team put in many hours of practice and match play to prepare which really showed on the court.  We had so many challenging matches, many that came down to just two points in the third-set tiebreak.  We are a small but mighty group and have grown to be not only determined teammates, but great friends as well.  I am ecstatic with how we did, but also have new goals set for next year!  Tennis is truly our happy place and we’re all thankful that the USTA has given us the platform to compete and succeed, but also opportunities to strive for more.”

— Men’s 40 & Over 4.5 — 2nd Place

The first Southern California men’s team to place at Nationals, the bunch out of San Gabriel Valley took home second place in the 4.0 division of Men’s 40 & Over. Led by Kenny Pedroza, the “LOTA Acorns” had a very strong showing throughout the round robin. Here, they compiled a record of 4-0, while taking down teams from the Caribbean, Middle States, New England and Eastern sections. As the No. 2 seed entering playoffs, the SGV squad matched up against Mid-Atlantic, a fellow undefeated team. Squeaking out a 3-2 victory, SoCal advanced to the championship, where they were ultimately bested by the team out of the Southern Section in a 3-2 final.

Our team lost in the final at Nationals. While the result initially felt disappointing in that we were so close to winning the National title for Southern California, our team had the unique experience to bond throughout the weekend of play in ways that brought us all closer as teammates and friends,” Pedroza mentioned. “We left Arizona with an immense sense of pride in the result we achieved, an ever-growing love of the game that means so much to us, and an appreciation for the way in which the USTA put on such a wonderful, player-friendly, experience. Having an opportunity to compete at Nationals really motivates our players to keep playing in leagues, working hard on their games, with the opportunity to once again play against the best players throughout the Country.”

WEEKEND #3: NOVEMBER 1-3, 2024

— Women’s 55 & Over 9.0 — 3rd Place

Snagging a third place finish in the 9.0 division of Women’s 55 & Over, the squad out of San Diego added another impressive finish to the Southern California section’s tally. Under the leadership of captains Darlene Gallego & Carolynne Yen, the ladies were a force on the court, amassing a record of 4-0 within rounders. In these first two days of matches, Gallego and Yen’s group secured victories over teams from the Southwest, Hawaii, Pacific Northwest and Middle States sections, earning them the No. 3 overall seed as they entered the playoffs. Here, San Diego would first go toe to toe with the No. 2 seeded team from Texas, where they would narrowly fall to defeat. As they looked to their next match that would determine the team that would earn third place, SD would prepare to do battle against the team representing Florida, until weather would not permit for the match to initially be played. As conditions held throughout the day, both teams agreed to compromise and leave with a share of third place.

— Mixed 18 & Over 7.0 — 1st Place

Securing SoCal’s first trophy in mixed play, Michael Gu’s team from Orange County left their mark on weekend three, as they took home first place and a Nationals’ title.  Competing in the 7.0 division of Mixed & Over, OC proved to be a formidable force, remaining one of only two undefeated teams after the round robin stage. Along the way, they defeated teams from the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, Southern, and Eastern sections, finishing with a perfect 4-0 record and earning the No. 2 seed heading into the playoffs. In the opening round, OC faced Hawaii again, emerging victorious with a 2-1 win to advance to the finals. There, they capped off their flawless weekend by defeating the No. 4 seed, Mid-Atlantic, 2-1 to claim the championship.

Last year, I organized an 18 & Over 7.0 mixed doubles team for the first time,” Gu stated. “Although we successfully won our league in Orange County, we lost in the Sectionals’ semifinals. As a captain, I realized that I needed to organize a better team this year, in order to win the Sectionals championship.  Earlier this year, we were able to recruit some very talented young players into our original team. After twelve league matches, we beat all of the teams in OC and advanced into Sectionals with full confidence. In April’s Sectionals, we won as a team, and it was a huge relief for myself knowing that I am able to lead a team to Nationals successfully. From April to November, it’s been a long journey for all our team members. I am very proud of all my key players, since they all committed to play Nationals in Orlando as well as improved their skills on court along the way. During Nationals, all of us stayed together. We made it through rain delays, player injuries, three matches on Friday and a finals match that was moved to indoor courts due to weather. Overall, it was an amazing experience for all of us to have won a National Championship together.”

— Mixed 18 & Over 8.0 — 2nd Place

With a second place finish in the 8.0 division of Mixed 18 & Over, Colin Tang’s team from San Gabriel Valley impressed all weekend. One of only three teams to have gone undefeated in rounders, Tang’s squad collected victories over teams from the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Southern and Florida sections. With their success, SGV earned themselves the No. 3 seed in the playoffs, where they would first take on the team from the Hawaii section. In the first round matchup, SoCal was victorious by a score of 2-1, pitting them against the team from Pacific Northwest to determine the overall champion. In a battle of undefeated teams, Northwest would ultimately prevail by a final of 3-0, handing Tang’s bunch the second place trophy.

— Mixed 18 & Over 10.0 — 1st Place

Rounding out the third weekend of play, Southern California found themselves winning their third overall National Championship of the year, as they found success in the 10.0 division of Mixed 18 & Over. Deborah Lee-Tep & Oluwatobi Ojo led the charge for the team from San Diego, captaining their team to the No. 2 seed entering playoffs following their showing in rounders. In the round robin, SoCal amassed a record of 3-1 as they took down teams from the Pacific Northwest, Eastern and Middle States sections. In the first round of the playoffs, SoCal kept their winning ways alive, defeating Missouri Valley by a score of 2-1. With NorCal also winning their first round matchup, the title match appeared as it would be an all-California team finale, until the weather had other plans. Halted by rain, the championship was not decided on court, but rather as the SoCal and NorCal teams came to an agreement to walk away as co-champions with courts being unplayable.

“Two years ago, we were surprised to advance to Nationals and placed third with a much smaller team,” Lee-Tep shared. “That experience taught us the importance of practicing and training together and we set our goal to win in 2024.  It was validating to see our efforts pay off. Winning the National Mixed 10.0 Championship was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. In the end, it was a full team effort. Every player on the team played a role on and off the court and we each stepped up in the matches to get the wins we needed. We had players with major injuries, such as a torn meniscus and ACLs, pull off incredible wins. Another teammate showed up even though it was the week before her wedding. The camaraderie pulled us through the pain and pressure. As a captain, I could not have asked for a more talented, fun, and dedicated team. I am very grateful to have been part of this team and for the unforgettable memories.”

WEEKEND #4: NOVEMBER 8-10, 2024

— Women’s 18 & Over 4.5 — 2nd Place

Kicking off the festivities for week four, Los Angeles’ “Slay All Day” claimed second place in the 4.5 division of Women’s 18 & Over. Led by captains Mandi Collier and April Hartstein, the SoCal ladies prevailed within the round robin, racking up four wins over teams from the Intermountain, Northern, Texas and Pacific Northwest sections. As the No. 3 seed entering playoffs, LA matched up against a fellow undefeated Mid-Atlantic team, where they would once again prevail by a score of 3-2. With this win, they advanced to the finals, against top-seeded NorCal. SoCal narrowly fell to defeat in the championship, earning them second place overall. This finish marks the second top-four placement at Nationals for both Hartstein and “Slay All Day” teams.

“Our experience at 4.5 18+ Nationals was unforgettable,” said Collier. “We were one of the larger teams of the weekend, boasting 16 players, many of whom were attending their second or third Nationals event of the year. This team was so special as it was made up of ladies from all over SoCal who have played together on different teams for many years, but usually falling short of Nationals. This year, we all came together and the stars truly aligned as we were not only able to get to Nationals, but get to the Finals! I am so proud of each and every player, and thankful to not only call them teammates, but friends as well.”

— Men’s 18 & Over 4.5 — 4th Place

Earning themselves a fourth place finish, Orange County’s “Body Shots” fought hard in the 4.5 division of the Men’s 18 & Over National Championships.  Francesco Nguyen and Leonard Wang captained their squad to a 4-0 record within rounders, securing them the No. 2 seed as they entered the playoffs. Their victories came against teams from the Intermountain, Hawaii, Caribbean and Eastern sections. In OC’s two playoff matches, they nearly were defeated by teams from Florida and Missouri Valley, ending their weekend as they placed in fourth.

“Thats exactly why we play,” shared Bryan Vo, member of the “Body Shots.” “It’s the camaraderie, the pressure, the butterflies and most importantly the memories we share together as friends and teammates. That’s what makes Nationals so fun.”

— Men’s 55 & Over 6.0 — 2nd Place

Walking away with another podium finish for SoCal, Justin Lee’s “Dare Doubles” clinched second place during the 6.0 division of Men’s 55 & Over. The team from San Gabriel Valley, the “Dare Doubles” put together a 3-1 record in the round robin, beating teams from the sections of New England, Middle States and Hawaii. All three of these victories came way via sweep, with SGV taking down their opponents by a score of 3-0. The No. 2 seed in the playoffs, SoCal secured a semifinals win over NorCal, again by a score of 3-0. In the finals, SoCal dropped the match to Intermountain by a final of 3-0, leaving them with second place.

“Over the three days of competition, I witnessed the relentless pursuit, the unyielding effort and comradeship turned into friendship. That meant more than anything else to me,” shared Lee about his team.

— Women’s 55 & Over 8.0 — 1st Place

Picking up the section’s fourth National Championship, the women from San Gabriel Valley reigned supreme in the 8.0 division of 55 & over play. Captained by Jane Wang & Khin Aye, the ladies cruised through their round robin matches with four wins over teams from the Southwest, Pacific Northwest, Southern and New England sections. The No. 3 seed in their playoff bracket, SGV first took down Hawaii by a final of 2-1, thrusting them into the finals against top-seeded NorCal. Earning bragging rights and a championship trophy, SoCal capped off their undefeated weekend with a 3-0 win over their same-state foes in the title match.

— Mixed 40 & Over 7.0 — 1st Place

Adding the fifth National Championship to the trophy case for SoCal, Orange County took home the gold in the 7.0 division of Mixed 40 & Over. Captained by Michael Gu and Jon Wang, the “Meta Legend” bunch took down teams from the Eastern, Caribbean and Northern sections in rounders, earning them the No. 4 seed for the playoffs. In their semifinals match, OC took down top-seeded Middle States by a score of 2-1, who had yet to be defeated prior to the contest. In the finale, OC was once again victorious, this time besting NorCal in a final of 3-0. This victory was not only a monumental achievement for SoCal, but it also marked Michael Gu’s second Nationals’ title of the year, making him the only SoCal captain to accomplish such a feat.

Since our “Meta Legend” team played in the championship during the weekend of Nov 1-3, some of us extended our stay in Orlando for preparation of this upcoming Nationals tournament,” Gu shared. “Some bad news came in a few days before the event started, as one of our key male players couldn’t come due to sudden illness. This put us into a very difficult situation with only three male players left to compete. Dealing with these circumstances, we still played strongly and won our first three matches in the round robin. Although we lost in our fourth match, we were able to get into the playoffs as the fourth seed. During the semifinals and finals matches, everyone played at their best, even with a few of us having continuously played more than ten matches since the beginning of the month. The championship win made this a unique achievement, since our “Meta Legend” teams were able to win two National Championships during back to back tournaments, all in the same location within ten days.”

— Mixed 40 & Over 8.0 — 2nd Place

Marking SoCal’s fifteenth team to place within the top-four at Nationals, San Gabriel Valley claimed a second place title in the 8.0 division of Mixed 40 & Over. Colin Tang and Laurie Manley led the way for the squad, with SGV managing them to a 3-1 record within rounders. Here, they defeated teams from the Pacific Northwest, Midwest and New England sections, earning them the No. 4 seed in the playoffs. In the team’s semifinals match, they defeated an undefeated Mid-Atlantic bunch by a final of 2-1. SGV would then narrowly lose in the championship, being bested by Hawaii in a 2-1 finish. This achievement marked Tang’s second podium finish at Nationals this year and the sixth time a SoCal team has secured a second-place finish in 2024.

“It was a good and fun experience for everyone on the team,” mentioned Tang. “The competition was top notch and everyone played amazing. We had to fight hard to get through the first two days and barely sneaked into Sunday.  Although the feeling was a bit bittersweet after coming so close to winning, we all had a blast hanging out together and am very proud of everyone coming in as a finalist. More importantly, we all got to spend time together and got to know an amazing group of people.”
