The path to the US Open officially began on Saturday, August 8th, as nine straight days of high-stakes junior competition got underway at the 2026 USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 16s & 18s National Championships at San Diego’s Barnes Tennis Center. Saturday’s opening action focused entirely on the Girls’ 16s division, which completed its first round of both Singles and Doubles play. The Girls’ 18s field took the court for opening-round action on Sunday, August 9th, while the Girls’ 16s moved into round two.

Sunday, August 16th

Girls’ 18s Singles 

Etching her name in history, No. 3 seed and SoCal’s own Thea Frodin became the newest champion of the Girls’ 18s Singles division on Sunday with a triumphant statement victory, powering past No. 4 seed Janae Preston 6-1, 6-0. The Woodland Hills native becomes the third consecutive Southern California resident to capture the Girls’ 18s Singles title, joining Alyssa Ahn (San Diego, CA) and Iva Jovic (Torrance, CA), who accomplished the feat in 2025 and 2024 respectively.

Frodin proved her versatility on the national stage, backing up her 2025 Girls’ 18s Doubles title with Kristina Penickova by hoisting the 2026 Singles trophy at the Billie Jean King Girls’ National Championships.

Frodin will now pack her bags for the biggest event in American tennis at the US Open. Her victory earns her main draw entry into US Open Singles, US Open Juniors Singles, a Women’s USTA W75 event, and a guaranteed $110,000 for competing in the first round in New York.

As the finalist, Preston will also head to New York after securing spots in US Open Singles Qualifying, US Open Juniors Singles, and a Women’s USTA W35 event. She is guaranteed $27,500 for reaching the first round of qualifying.

In the third-place match, No. 1 seed Julieta Pareja rolled past No. 33 seed Chukwumelije Clarke 6-1, 6-3. Pareja earns entries into US Open Juniors Singles and a Women’s USTA W35 qualifying draw, while Clarke secures a spot in US Open Juniors Singles Qualifying.

Girls’ 18s Doubles 

Capturing the Girls’ 18s Doubles championship, the No. 9-seeded team of Bella Payne and Sara Shumate bested fellow No. 9 seeds Welles Newman and Jordyn Hazelitt 6-2, 6-1. With the victory, Payne and Shumate clinched their tickets to Flushing Meadows, earning main draw berths in both US Open Doubles and US Open Juniors Doubles.

In the third-place match, Brooke Kwon and Alyson Shannon defeated Natalie Kha and Yilin Chen 7-5, 6-1.

Saturday, August 15th

Girls’ 18s Singles 

In a compelling Semifinals matchup between two of Southern California’s premier young talents, No. 3 seed Thea Frodin defeated top-seeded Julieta Pareja in a razor-thin 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) victory. On the bottom half of the draw, No. 4 seed Janae Preston outlasted No. 33 seed Chukwumelije Clarke 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in a grueling battle that spanned over three hours.

Frodin and Preston will square off on Sunday for the title and a spot in tournament history, aiming to join an illustrious list of past champions that includes Iva Jovic, Lindsay Davenport, and Tracy Austin. Sunday’s winner will claim coveted wild cards into the US Open Singles Main Draw, US Open Juniors Singles Main Draw, and a Women’s USTA W75 Main Draw event. The finalist earns wild cards for US Open Singles Qualifying, US Open Juniors Singles Main Draw, and a Women’s USTA W35 Singles Main Draw.

Frodin aims to achieve rare history on Sunday. Having claimed the Girls’ 18s doubles crown last year alongside Kristina Penickova, a singles victory would complete an elite multi-discipline double. If Preston prevails, she will capture her first career Billie Jean King Girls’ Nationals title in any age division.

Meanwhile, Pareja and Clarke will contest the third-place match. The bronze medalist secures entry into the US Open Juniors Main Draw and a USTA W35 qualifying spot, while the fourth-place finisher receives a US Open Juniors Qualifying entry.

Girls’ 18s Doubles 

Saturday’s doubles Semifinals delivered decisive results. First, No. 9 seeds Bella Payne and Sara Shumate advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win over SoCal tandem Natalie Kha and Yilin Chen. They will face fellow No. 9 seeds Welles Newman and Jordyn Hazelitt, who secured their spot in the final with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory against SoCal’s Brooke Kwon and Alyson Shannon.

The teams of Payne and Shumate and Newman and Hazelitt will meet Sunday to battle for gold. Beyond the prestige, the champions will secure a US Open Main Draw Doubles berth alongside a US Open Juniors Main Draw slot. Victory would place them alongside professional greats who won in years past, including Jovic, Madison Keys, and Coco Vandeweghe.

In Sunday’s third-place playoff, Kha and Chen will square off against Kwon and Shannon.

Girls’ 16s Singles 

The first title of the weekend was decided Saturday in dramatic fashion as top seed Shristi Selvan claimed the Girls’ 16s Singles crown. Selvan overcame her close friend and training partner, No. 14 seed Aarini Bhattacharya, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a three-hour epic battle.

Selvan’s victory required sheer grit after severe cramping set in during the final set. Beginning in her hand and wrist, the spasms quickly spread to her quads and calves. Down 30-15 on serve in the fifth game, Selvan requested a medical timeout but was frozen mid-court behind the baseline, unable to walk to her chair. She received a time violation and a subsequent point penalty, pushing the score to 40-15. Because regulations prevent a second medical timeout for the same issue, she was issued another code violation, which awarded the game to Bhattacharya for a 3-2 lead.

Writhing in pain, Selvan was helped off the court by the tournament referee and medical staff. Following treatment during the changeover, the cramping subsided and she staged a miraculous return. Selvan captured the next game, built a 4-2 lead, and weathered a late push from Bhattacharya to close out the decider, 6-4.

With the win, Selvan adds her name to a historic legacy of Girls’ 16s champions, joining legendary tennis figures such as Mary Joe Fernandez, Austin, and Chris Evert.

In the third-place match, No. 2 seed Nikol Davletshina captured the bronze ball by defeating No. 6 seed Avita Beitler 6-2, 6-2. Davletshina locks up a main draw spot at an ITF J60 event, while Beitler earns an ITF J60 qualifying berth.

Girls’ 16s Doubles 

The day’s second crown was awarded to the No. 9-seeded pair of Abigail Haile and Olivia de Los Reyes, who defeated fellow No. 9 seeds Madeline Cleary and Isabelle Nguyen 6-3, 6-1 to capture the Girls’ 16s Doubles title. In victory, Haile and de Los Reyes add their names to an elite lineage of champions that includes hall-of-famers such as Austin and Evert.

In the third-place match, Daniella Sales and Aleksandra Jerkunica snagged the bronze ball in a three-set thriller. Sales and Jerkunica mounted a come-from-behind effort to defeat the No. 9-seeded sister duo of Nikol and Daniela Davletshina, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Friday, August 14th

Girls’ 18s Singles

With Friday’s Quarterfinal clashes in the books, the Girls’ 18s Singles Final 4 is officially locked in, and Southern California holds down half the bracket. Saturday’s Semifinal slate features top seed Julieta Pareja (Carlsbad, CA), No. 3 seed Thea Frodin (Woodland Hills, CA), No. 4 seed Janae Preston (Henderson, NV), and No. 33 seed Chukwumelije Clarke (Humble, TX).

Pareja continued her clinical march through the draw, putting away No. 8 seed Jordyn Hazelitt 6-2, 6-3. Meanwhile, Frodin engineered an incredible comeback against No. 9 seed Alexis Nguyen. After dropping a tight opening set and battling through a second-set tiebreak, Frodin slammed the door with a dominant third-set bagel to win 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-0. Her reward is a blockbuster all-SoCal Semifinal showdown against Pareja on Saturday morning for a coveted spot in the National Championship match.

On the other side of the bracket, Preston mounted her own rally, fighting back from a set down to halt No. 33 seed Annika Penickova’s run 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. She meets fellow dark horse Clarke, who delivered a razor-sharp performance to eliminate No. 16 seed Thara Gowda 7-6 (5), 6-3. Preston and Clarke will duel Saturday morning to see who crashes the SoCal party in Sunday’s final.

Girls’ 18s Doubles

Efficiency was the theme of the day in the Girls’ 18s Doubles Quarterfinals, as all four advancing tandems booked their semifinal berths in convincing, straight-set fashion without playing a single tiebreak.

Saturday’s Semifinals features No. 9 seeds Welles Newman (Boca Raton, FL) and Jordyn Hazelitt (Henderson, NV), SoCal’s Brooke Kwon (Diamond Bar, CA) and partner Alyson Shannon (Plano, TX), No. 9 seeds Bella Payne (Bradenton, FL) and Sara Shumate (Bradenton Beach, FL), and SoCal duo Natalie Kha (Chino Hills, CA) and Yilin Chen (San Diego, CA). 

The No. 9-seeded pair of Newman and Hazelitt punched their ticket with a steady 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ellery Mendell and Briley Rhoden. They move on to face Kwon and Shannon, who outmaneuvered fellow SoCal entry Maria Aytoytan and Ireland O’Brien, 6-1, 7-5.

In the bottom half of the draw, Payne and Shumate halted the run of No. 9 seeds Raina Miae Kim and Chloe Zigliara in a 6-4, 6-1 result. Closing out the evening, Kha and Chen turned in a resolute 6-3, 6-4 win over Danielle Young and Anna Frey.

The stage is set for a high-stakes Saturday. If Kwon/Shannon and Kha/Chen both prevail, an all-SoCal final could be on the horizon for Sunday’s title match. Standing in their way are Newman/Hazelitt and Payne/Shumate, both eager to disrupt the local showcase.

Girls’ 16s Singles

Their victories set the stage for an intriguing National Championship clash built on deep familiarity. Both hailing from USTA’s Mid-Atlantic Section (Selvan from Maryland and Bhattacharya from Virginia), the two are close friends and daily training partners at the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) in College Park, MD. Saturday morning’s final carries massive rewards: the champion earns a main draw singles wildcard into the US Open Juniors, while the finalist receives a berth into the 16s Orange Bowl Main Draw.

In the third-place playoff, Beitler and Davletshina will collide with significant prizes still on the line. The winner locks up a main draw entry into an ITF J60 event, while fourth place secures a spot in ITF J60 qualifying.

Girls’ 16s Doubles

The No. 9-seeded duo of Abigail Haile and Olivia de Los Reyes controlled their Semifinal contest from start to finish, shaking off Daniella Sales and Aleksandra Jerkunica 6-1, 6-3 to punch their ticket to Saturday’s final.

Joining them in the championship match is the No. 9-seeded SoCal tandem of Madeline Cleary and Isabelle Nguyen, who outlasted fellow No. 9 seeds Nikol and Daniela Davletshina in a gritty three-set battle, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

With Haile, Cleary, and Nguyen all originating from Southern California, three of the four players taking the court Saturday afternoon will be playing on home turf. Whichever local talent lifts the trophy will not only claim the title of Girls’ 16s Doubles National Champions, but will also write their names in tournament history in front of a hometown San Diego crowd.

In Saturday afternoon’s third-place match, Sales and Jerkunica will square off with the Davletshina sisters for the bronze.

Thursday, August 13th

Girls’ 18s Singles

It was more of the same from No. 1 seed Julieta Pareja on Thursday, as she asserted her dominance over No. 33 seed Kennedy Drenser-Hagmann with a 6-1, 6-0 win. Pareja has dropped just 11 games across the four matches she has played thus far. In the Quarterfinals on Friday morning, she takes on No. 8 seed Jordyn Hazelitt.

In the Round of 16 on Thursday, No. 3 seed Thea Frodin put together her cleanest match of the tournament to date, winning with authority 6-2, 6-0 over No. 33 seed Delaney Letzel. The victory sets up an all-California Quarterfinal clash on Friday morning, where Frodin dukes it out with No. 9 seed Alexis Nguyen.

Girls’ 18s Doubles

The first top seed amongst the four draws fell on Thursday in the Girls’ 18s Doubles division, as the No. 9-seeded team of Welles Newman and Jordyn Hazelitt knocked off No. 1 seeds Kristina and Annika Penickova 6-4, 6-7 (7), 10-3. Newman and Hazelitt advance to Friday afternoon’s Quarterfinals to face Ellery Mendell and Briley Rhoden.

Brooke Kwon and Alyson Shannon stayed hot, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Brooke Franklin and Summer Ratcliff. The win sets up an all-SoCal Quarterfinal clash on Friday against Maria Aytoyan and Ireland O’Brien, who pulled off a 6-1, 6-4 upset over No. 8 seeds—and last year’s Girls’ 16s Doubles champions—Olivia Dartawan and Autumn Xu.

After dropping the opening set, No. 9 seeds Raina Miae Kim and Chloe Zigliara turned the tables on Shaya Jovanovic and Molly Widlansky, prevailing 2-6, 6-3, 11-9. Next up is a Friday afternoon clash with fellow No. 9 seeds Bella Payne and Sara Shumate (Charlotte, NC).

Girls’ 16s Singles

With Thursday’s Quarterfinal action in the Girls’ 16s Singles division in the books, the Final 4 is officially set. 

Friday’s Semifinal lineup features No. 1 seed Shristi Selvan (Laurel, MD), No. 2 seed Nikol Davletshina (Boca Raton, FL), No. 6 seed Avita Beitler (Scandia, MN), and No. 14 seed Aarini Bhattacharya (Oakton, VA). 

On Thursday, Top-seeded Shristi Selvan advanced after opening up a 4-1 first-set lead before Grace Hong (Edison, NJ) was forced to retire due to injury. Meanwhile, No. 6 seed Avita Beitler punched her ticket to the Semifinals with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over Olivia Lin. Selvan and Beitler will clash on Friday with a spot in the National Championship match on the line.

On the other side of the draw, No. 14 seed Aarini Bhattacharya put together a sharp performance, defeating No. 13 seed Chukwunoneeru Smarty 6-1, 6-4. She will meet No. 2 seed Nikol Davletshina, who outlasted No. 7 seed Abigail Haile in a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 three-set marathon. Bhattacharya and Davletshina will square off Friday for a berth in the final.

Girls’ 16s Doubles

Quarterfinal play wrapped up Thursday in the Girls’ 16s Doubles draw, locking in four elite teams for Friday’s Semifinals.

Vying for a spot in the title match will be No. 9 seeds Abigail Haile (Los Angeles, CA) and Olivia de Los Reyes (Scarsdale, NY), Daniella Sales (West Harrison, NY) and Aleksandra Jerkunica (Fort Lauderdale, FL), No. 9 seeds Nikol and Daniela Davletshina (Boca Raton, FL), and No. 9 seeds Isabelle Nguyen (San Gabriel, CA) and Madeline Cleary (Moorpark, CA).

They advance to face Sales and Jerkunica, who secured their own breakthrough victory by upending No. 4 seeds Adelyn Gross (Saint Louis, MO) and Masha Semenova (Randolph, NJ) 7-5, 6-3.

On the bottom half of the draw, the Davletshina sisters passed a tight first-set test to overcome Elle Groslimond and Riko Pang 7-6 (8), 6-2. Wednesday, August 12th

Girls’ 18s Singles

No. 1 seed Julieta Pareja coasted to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Anya Arora in Wednesday’s fourth round, setting up a Round of 16 clash with No. 33 seed Kennedy Drenser-Hagmann on Thursday morning.

Bouncing back after dropping the opening set, No. 3 seed Thea Frodin rallied past No. 17 seed Lauren Nolan 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to punch her ticket to the Round of 16.

No. 33 seed Delaney Letzel continued her run of upsets in round four, knocking off No. 12 seed Molly Widlansky 6-3, 7-6 (5). Her reward is an all-SoCal showdown on Thursday morning against Frodin.

Leading 6-1, 4-2, Brooke Kwon secured another upset win when No. 33 seed Isabelle DeLuccia was forced to retire mid-match due to injury. “I’m pretty tired,” Kwon said following her match Wednesday. “Yesterday’s match was so grueling. There must have been four or five match points combined for both of us.” Kwon now advances to the Round of 16 to take on No. 16 seed Thara Gowda (Rochester Hills, MI). The matchup offers a familiar foe for Kwon, who defeated Gowda 6-4, 6-2 in the final round of qualifying at the W15 SoCal Pro Series Claremont Tournament earlier this summer.

Girls’ 18s Doubles

Brooke Kwon and Alyson Shannon dug deep to seal a 7-5, 6-7 (4), 10-5 victory over Kayden Johnson and Zimora McKnight in the third round. Up next in Thursday afternoon’s fourth round, they square off against Brooke Franklin and Summer Ratcliff. With the win, Kwon remains the lone SoCal player still competing in both the Girls’ 18s Singles and Doubles draws.

Continuing their momentum, Maria Aytoyan and Ireland O’Brien coasted to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Brooke Wallman and Adla Lopez. They advance to Thursday’s fourth round for a showdown against No. 8 seeds Olivia Dartawan and Autumn Xu.

In a three-set battle, No. 9 seeds Raina Miae Kim and Chloe Zigliara emerged victorious with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 win over Anqi Mei and Julia Zhang. 

They advance to face Shaya Jovanovic and Molly Widlansky, who pulled off a massive fourth-round upset by dismantling No. 5 seeds Carolina Castro and Estela Loureiro 6-3, 6-0. The two teams will meet Thursday for a spot in the Quarterfinals.

Scoring another upset, Natalie Kha and Yilin Chen outlasted the No. 6-seeded SoCal duo of Kingsley Wolf and Julia Seversen 6-3, 4-6, 10-4. They move on to face No. 9 seeds Catherine Rennard (Asheville, NC) and Aya Manning on Thursday afternoon.

Girls’ 16s Singles

As the last two SoCal players standing in the Girls’ 16s Singles draw, No. 7 seed Abigail Haile prevailed over No. 33 seed Kiana Smith in a hard-fought 7-6 (5), 6-4 Round of 16 clash. Next up, Haile meets No. 2 seed Nikol Davletshina in Thursday’s Quarterfinals.

Girls’ 16s Doubles

Notching a key victory, No. 9 seeds Isabelle Nguyen and Madeline Cleary ousted No. 6 seeds Vanessa Kruse and Alexandra Grilliot 6-3, 6-3. On Thursday, they will challenge the No. 2-seeded tandem of Sammie Mercer (Huntington, WV) and Vibha Gogineni in the Quarterfinals.

Wednesday’s “Match of the Day” honors went to Brooke Kwon and Alyson Shannon, who held their composure in a deciding match tiebreak to overcome Kayden Johnson and Zimora McKnight 7-5, 6-7 (4), 10-5.

Tuesday, August 11th

Girls’ 18s Singles

Setting the tempo early, top-seeded Julieta Pareja controlled Maria Aytoyan throughout her third-round match, powering to a 6-2, 6-4 win. She sets up an all-SoCal clash for the second straight round when she faces Anya Arora on Wednesday.

Anya Arora completed the upset over No. 33 seed Bentley Sparks with a 6-2, 6-4 victory to surge into the fourth round. She will look to keep that momentum going when she battles Pareja on Wednesday.

Dominant from start to finish, No. 14 seed Yilin Chen dispatched Ashley Kurikazi 6-0, 6-2 in third-round action. Next up on Wednesday, she takes on No. 33 seed Kennedy Drenser-Hagmann.

No. 15 seed Armira Kockinis turned in a clinical performance in her round-three contest, dismissing No. 33 seed Autumn Xu 6-1, 6-4. In Wednesday’s fourth round, she squares off against Aya Manning (Irving, TX).

Girls’ 18s Singles

Top seed Julieta Pareja launched her tournament with authority following a first-round bye, storming past Maya Chen (Edinburg, TX) 6-1, 6-1 in round two. The win sets up a Tuesday afternoon showdown against fellow SoCal native and No. 33 seed Maria Aytoyan.

Maria Aytoyan was flawless in her second-round debut off a bye, putting together a dominant 6-0, 6-0 performance against Catherine Wilcox. She now turns her focus to Tuesday’s marquee matchup against top-seeded Pareja.

Fresh off earning “Player of the Day” honors on Sunday, Anya Arora kept her momentum rolling by scoring a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set upset over No. 17 seed Alanna Ingalsbe. Arora advances to round three on Tuesday to face No. 33 seed Bentley Sparks. 

No. 14 seed Yilin Chen soared into round three with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Yui Watanabe (Folsom, CA) in her opening match. She moves on to face Ashley Kurizaki (Honolulu, HI) in a Tuesday afternoon clash.

No. 3 seed Thea Frodin emerged victorious from a hard-fought SoCal duel, outlasting Raina Miae Kim 7-6 (3), 6-3. In round three on Tuesday, she battles No. 33 seed Hannah Ayrault (Atlanta, GA).

In a three-set tug-of-war, No. 33 seed Delaney Letzel prevailed 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 over Samaya Smith in her tournament debut. On Tuesday, she squares off against No. 17 seed Kasia Chen.

No. 17 seed Julia Seversen charted a smooth path into round three, navigating past Gabriella Slovak (Jamestown, NC) 6-1, 7-5. Briley Rhoden awaits her on Tuesday.

In one of the biggest surprises of the tournament thus far, Brooke Kwon and Alyson Shannon knocked off No. 4 seeds Thea Frodin and Emery Combs in a thrilling 6-2, 2-6, 10-6 battle. They move on to face Kayden Johnson (Houston, TX) and Zimora McKnight (McKinney, TX) in round three.

Adding another SoCal upset to the ledger, Kara Garcia and Lily Stohl rallied from behind to shock No. 9 seeds Tayler Conway and Angelina Bravo 6-7 (8), 6-1, 10-7. They will battle Brooke Franklin (Brentwood, TN) and Summer Ratcliff (Carmel, IN) in third-round play.

No. 17 seed Madeline Cleary continued her strong run in round three, securing a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kendyl Mercer. In Tuesday’s fourth round, she challenges top seed Shristi Selvan.

No. 33 seed Charlotte Kim produced another stellar performance, cruising past Kshetra Jinukala 6-2, 6-4. On Tuesday afternoon, she takes the court against No. 9 seed Vanessa Kruse.

No. 33 seed Tanvi Pandey asserted full control in her third-round contest, rolling to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Corinne Winningham. On Tuesday afternoon, she meets No. 3 seed Natalie Frisbie (Gallatin, TN).

Autumn Xu earned “Player of the Day” honors following a stellar dual-division effort on Monday. She opened with a gutsy three-set triumph in Girls’ 18s Singles, overcoming Blythe Sturman 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. Xu then carried that spark over to Girls’ 18s Doubles, teaming up with Olivia Dartawan to secure a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Mia Soso (Bloomingdale, IL) and Prisha Lingam (Bloomfield Hills, MI).

Olivia Lewis (Yucaipa, CA) bested Rashi Singh (Minneapolis, MN) in straight sets, earning a 6-2, 6-2 victory to begin her tournament run. She now shifts her sights to No. 8 seed Jordyn Hazelitt (Henderson, NV) on Monday morning.

Raina Miae Kim (Santa Monica, CA) dug deep in her opening-round contest, outlasting Lucy Stein (Oak Park, IL) 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (1). On Monday morning, she will take on No. 3 seed Thea Frodin (Woodland Hills, CA) in a marquee matchup of SoCal talent.

Making her tournament debut after an opening-round bye, No. 7 seed Abigail Haile picked up a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory over Elsa Sahandi (Los Gatos, CA). On Monday afternoon, she goes up against No. 33 seed Natalia Martinez (Elm Grove, WI) in round three.

No. 17 seed Madeline Cleary capitalized on her first-round bye, toppling Lydia Parranto (Naperville, IL) 6-2, 7-6 (1). In Monday’s third round, she faces Kendyl Mercer (Cypress, TX).
