Racquet Sports Industry (RSI) has announced the winners of its 24th annual “2024 Champions of Tennis Awards,” a prestigious program recognizing excellence and dedication in the sport of tennis. In addition to its highly anticipated Person of the Year award, RSI celebrated achievements in 28 other categories, showcasing individuals, businesses, and organizations committed to advancing the sport and business of tennis.
The Southern California tennis community earned high honors this year, with four awards presented to members of the section. Notably, three of these honorees hail from San Diego County, further solidifying the region’s status as a hub for tennis excellence.
Westwood Sports in San Diego was named Pro/Specialty Retailer of the Year, celebrated for its exceptional service, unwavering dedication to the tennis community, and commitment to supporting players of all levels.
Amani Shah and Ayanna Shah, talented sisters from San Diego, were jointly awarded Junior Tennis Champions of the Year. Their remarkable achievements on and off the court exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship, hard work, and leadership that inspire the next generation of players. Both sisters were active members of the USTA Southern California Youth Leadership Council, where they contributed to initiatives that enhance junior tennis programming, foster connectivity among players, and give back to the tennis community. In 2019, Amani and Ayanna co-founded Second Serve, an organization addressing barriers to entry in tennis by collecting and donating new and gently used equipment and offering free clinics. Their efforts ensure that more young players can enjoy the sport they love while fostering inclusion and access.
From Chula Vista, Stephen “Steve” Kappes was honored as the Adaptive Tennis Champion of the Year. A USPTA Professional and 19-year member, Steve’s tireless efforts have created inclusive opportunities for players with disabilities, leaving a profound impact on the community. He co-founded the nationally recognized San Diego Wounded Warrior Tennis Program in 2009, leveraging his background as a former Navy officer to enhance quality of life for injured service members through tennis and camaraderie. Steve is deeply embedded in the San Diego tennis community, having served on multiple boards and coached players of all ages. Additionally, he contributes nationally through roles on the USTA’s Adaptive Tennis Committee and the USPTA’s Adaptive Tennis Task Force.
Rounding out the Southern California winners, Steve Riggs of Orange County was named PTR Member of the Year. A former tennis director for the City of Irvine, Steve’s passion for tennis has taken him to new heights. After managing nearly 40 tennis professionals during his 16-year tenure, he transitioned to consulting, coaching, and organizing innovative programming such as Universal Tennis events. As a Junior Team Tennis (JTT) Area League Coordinator, Steve continues to nurture young talent while co-directing a prominent tennis seminar in Southern California.
These awards underscore the vital role Southern California’s tennis leaders play in growing the game and fostering a vibrant, inclusive community. Each honoree exemplifies the passion, innovation, and dedication needed to elevate tennis both regionally and nationally.
“The Southern California section continues to set the bar for innovation and excellence in tennis,” said Trevor Kronemann, Executive Director of USTA Southern California. “We are incredibly proud of this year’s honorees and their contributions to our sport. Their achievements inspire us all to work harder to grow and improve the game for players of every age and ability.”
The “Champions of Tennis Awards” shine a spotlight on the remarkable individuals and organizations that embody the values of dedication, sportsmanship, and community engagement. Southern California’s winners serve as a testament to the region’s enduring commitment to excellence in tennis. Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees!
