Cool Down Corner: Summer Tips for Junior Players

Summer in SoCal means more tennis, and more heat. Here are some essential tips to help junior players stay cool, hydrated, and protected on court, covering everything from smart hydration habits to sun safety and recovery routines.

A must-read for players, parents, and coaches as the summer season heats up!

High School Tennis Teams: Are You Ready to Compete This Summer?

Get ready for a summer showdown like no other! The High School Tournament on Campus Open is heading to Marina High School on Saturday, July 19, and it’s your chance to bring the heat on the court! Grab your high school teammates and enter this exciting mid-summer clash.

This co-ed team event is open to incoming freshmen through rising seniors (sorry, Class of 2025, this one’s not for you) and features an exciting line up of Boys & Girls Singles, Boys & Girls Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.

Each team must include at least 2 girls and 2 boys (with a max of 3 of each). Space is limited to just 8 teams, and registration is first come, first served, so don’t delay!

All captains must sign up through the JotForm Submission Application and complete registration via USTA Serve Tennis. Entry time will be tracked via JotForm submissions.

Whether you’re chasing medals or just in it for the fun, this mid-summer clash is a can’t-miss moment for high school tennis players across Southern California.

Save the Date: Girls High School Tennis Workshop

Join us for a fun, competitive, and educational experience designed to help high school players of all levels improve their game and discover new tennis opportunities as they get ready for the Girls High School season!

The camp offers a dynamic day of tennis, featuring a series of skill-building drills and fun competitions! This is a great opportunity for players to sharpen their tennis skills in singles, doubles, serve, and strategy with experienced coaches.

The Level 2 Team Intersectionals between SoCal, NorCal, Intermountain, and Pacific Northwest are coming soon. Be sure to enter by the entry deadline. Dates and sites can be found below with links to register (if available).

Discounted L7 Tournaments

In an effort to provide play and tournament opportunities focusing on the underserved or underrepresented areas, the USTA SoCal staff has added a number of discounted Level 7 tournaments. These tournaments are nearly free – once players play the tournament to completion, they will receive a refund minus fees (approximately $4.25).

Coaching Workshops

Ready to start coaching? The USTA Coaching Fundamentals Workshop is a hands-on, two-day event that teaches you how to coach beginners and low-intermediate players. Led by USTA-approved National Coach Developers, it’s open to anyone 18+ (or 16+ with a signed waiver), recognized by certifying organizations, and ideal for Level 1 Coach Certification. Completing the pre-course is recommended.

USTA SoCal and Positive Coaching Alliance are offering a free 2025 web series on positive coaching. Led by expert PCA Trainers, each virtual workshop blends sports psychology with real-world tips from top athletes and coaches.

August 14: Coaching with Empathy
November 20: Culture, Practices, & Games

Other Information

> ZERO TOLERANCE IS IN FULL EFFECT: USTA Southern California has implemented a Zero Tolerance Policy at all USTA SoCal Junior Sanctioned events, focused on spectator behavior. Parents, coaches, and other attendees are expected to maintain respectful conduct at all times. Any unsportsmanlike behavior may result in immediate removal for the remainder of the event without appeal. Let’s work together to foster a positive and supportive atmosphere for our junior players.

> FEEFO: After every tournament, you should be receiving a tournament survey from Feefo. Please take a moment to fill out the survey(s). It’s very important when it comes time for the staff and Junior Comp Committee to award new bids and it also helps us improve our tournaments. Responses will remain confidential.

> BECOME AN OFFICIAL: We are looking for more people to become certified officials. Officials ensure fair play, sportsmanship, and smooth tournaments at every level—from local to professional. Serve as a Roving Umpire, Line Umpire, Referee, or Chair Umpire! If you’re interested, please start HERE.

> ENTRY FEES: Need help paying for entry fees? Please email Ai Takamori from USTA SoCal and we’ll try to help you! Player must be free of suspension points and grievances to receive assistance.
