Back-to-back weekends of Sectionals in Orange County marked the conclusion of the 2025 Adult League season, drawing nearly 1,200 competitors from all 13 areas of the section. Matches were contested at the Great Park Tennis Center, Costa Mesa Tennis Center, and Nellie Gail Ranch Tennis Club, with all titles decided at Great Park.
The first weekend, held December 5-7, featured 18 & Over Tri-Level Sectionals, contested across six divisions based on skill level and gender. The second weekend, from December 12-14, showcased Women’s 3.5-2.5 Tri-Level, Mixed Tri-Level, and Mixed 55 & Over Sectionals. As one of the most unique formats in Adult League competition, Tri-Level Sectionals once again delivered one of the most exciting team events of the year, bringing together players of different NTRP levels to compete on the same roster.
Competition formats varied by division and by weekend. During the first weekend, the 4.0-3.0 and 4.5-3.5 Women’s divisions were contested through flighted play, with advancing teams determined by flight winners and overall results, while the 5.0-4.0 Women competed in a round-robin format. On the Men’s side, the 4.0-3.0 and 4.5-3.5 divisions featured unflighted matches with advancement based on overall records, while the 5.0-4.0 Men’s division was also decided via round robin.
In the second weekend, the Women’s 3.5-2.5 Tri-Level division featured unflighted competition with advancement determined by match results. Both the 4.0-3.0 and 4.5-3.5 Mixed Tri-Level divisions were played in flighted formats, while Mixed 6.0 and Mixed 9.0 were contested through round-robin play. Mixed 7.0 featured unflighted matches with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals, and Mixed 8.0 advanced the top two teams directly to the final.
TRI-LEVEL
4.0-3.0 WOMEN – Orange County’s “Monarch Butterflies,” captained by Elyzabeth Pham and playing out of Laguna Niguel Racquet Club, claimed the title after an undefeated weekend. Flighted alongside teams from San Diego, Central Coast, and San Fernando Valley, OC opened play with 2-1 victories over San Diego and Central Coast before sweeping San Fernando Valley 3-0. Advancing to the playoffs as the top team in their flight, the “Monarch Butterflies” continued their run with a 3-0 sweep of an unbeaten San Gabriel Valley squad in the semifinals.
In the championship match, OC edged Beach Cities 2-1 to cap off a perfect weekend. The finalists from Beach Cities, led by captains Kristie Sherrill and Kathleen Stephens out of Manhattan Country Club, went 2-1 in flighted play and earned a 3-0 sweep in the semifinals to reach the final.
4.0-3.0 MEN – In the Men’s division of 4.0-3.0 play, Orange County’s “Meta Legend,” captained by Nicholas Lau and Derek Lee and based out of Heritage Park Tennis, added another championship for the area, completing the sweep at the 4.0-3.0 level. Competing in unflighted play, OC finished 2-1, sweeping Bakersfield and San Gabriel Valley while falling only to Los Angeles.
Advancing to the final based on overall record and individual wins, “Meta Legend” defeated San Fernando Valley 2-1 to secure the title. The finalists, San Fernando Valley’s “Greatshot,” captained by Sang Ur and Kamron Shahriaree of Glendale Tennis Academy, also went 2-1 in pool play, earning wins over San Diego and Bakersfield.
4.5-3.5 WOMEN – San Gabriel Valley’s “Wild Cards” left no doubt in the Women’s 4.5-3.5 division, rolling through both flighted and playoff competition to secure the gold. Flighted with teams from Beach Cities, San Diego, and Ventura County, the team led by Colin Tang and playing out of Arroyo High School opened play with 3-0 sweeps of Ventura County and Beach Cities, followed by a 2-1 win over San Diego.
Advancing as the top seed, the “Wild Cards” swept Central Coast in the semifinals before completing their perfect weekend with another 3-0 sweep over Inland Empire in the final. Inland Empire’s “Elevenis,” captained by Susan Campbell-Boland, went 2-1 in flighted play, advanced as the best non-flight winner, and defeated San Diego in the semifinals to reach the championship match.
4.5-3.5 MEN – Completing a clean sweep of the 4.5-3.5 divisions, San Gabriel Valley’s “Wild Cards,” again captained by Colin Tang, captured the Men’s title in dominant fashion. SGV went unbeaten in unflighted play, sweeping San Diego and Inland Empire 3-0 and earning a 2-1 win over another Inland Empire squad.
Advancing to the semifinals, the “Wild Cards” swept Los Angeles before closing out the weekend with a 3-0 sweep of Orange County in the final. The OC finalists, captained by Cuong Ly and playing out of Heritage Park Tennis, went 2-1 in unflighted matches and earned a 2-1 semifinal victory over Inland Empire.
5.0-4.0 WOMEN – San Diego’s “University City Racquet Club,” captained by Masako Wilson and Grace Yao, claimed the 5.0-4.0 Women’s title after going undefeated in round-robin play. SD posted three 2-1 victories, defeating two Orange County teams and a Los Angeles squad to secure the championship.
The finalists from Orange County, captained by Julie Le and Kristina Ebon and playing out of Los Caballeros Racquet & Sport Club, finished 2-1, with their lone loss coming against the champions.
5.0-4.0 MEN – San Diego completed a sweep of the 5.0-4.0 divisions as “Barnes TC,” captained by Vinh Dang and playing out of the Barnes Tennis Center, earned the Men’s title. Competing in round-robin play, SD finished 2-1 and claimed the championship on the tiebreaker for most individual match wins.
The champions swept Orange County and another San Diego team, with their only loss coming against Los Angeles. The finalists, also from San Diego and captained by Priscilla Martinez out of Barnes Tennis Center, finished 2-1 as well, falling only to the eventual champions.
Spirit Award Winner – Bakersfield’s “Team Tess,” captained by Marites Idica, earned Spirit Award honors after being selected as the winner through a fan vote conducted on USTA SoCal’s social media platforms, recognizing the team’s outstanding spirit and attire throughout the weekend.
WOMEN’S TRI-LEVEL
WOMEN’S 3.5-2.5 – San Diego North County controlled the Women’s 3.5-2.5 field from start to finish, with Cristina Gerardi’s “Kit Carson” standing alone as the division’s unbeaten champion. In unflighted play, SDNC defeated Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley 2-1 and swept San Diego 3-0.
Advancing to the final as the lone undefeated team, “Kit Carson” faced SGV once again and secured a second 2-1 victory to claim the championship. The finalists, SGV’s “Glowing Aceholes,” captained by Amy Tsai and Caroline Tran and playing out of Arroyo High School, went 2-1 prior to the finals, sweeping two San Diego teams before falling to the champions.
MIXED TRI-LEVEL
MIXED 4.0-3.0 – For the second time in as many weeks, Orange County’s “Meta Legend” once again rose to the occasion, cruising through flighted play before closing out a dominant run to take home the Mixed 4.0-3.0 title. The OC squad from David Sills Lower Peters Canyon Park posted 3-0 sweeps of Beach Cities and SFV and a 2-1 win over SDNC. Advancing to the final, captain Nicholas Lau saw his team sweep San Gabriel Valley 3-0. The SGV finalists, the “Mixed Nuts,” captained by Esther Hwang and David Nichols out of Flint Canyon Tennis Club, went 3-0 in flighted play, sweeping teams from San Diego, Inland Empire, and Antelope Valley.
MIXED 4.5-3.5 – Timely sweeps and a key tiebreaker pushed Orange County’s “Costa Mesa Tennis Center” squad past a deep field, earning them the Mixed 4.5-3.5 championship. Frank Tran’s bunch went 2-1 in flighted play, sweeping Inland Empire and one San Diego North County team before falling to another SDNC squad. Advancing on the tiebreaker for individual wins, OC defeated Beach Cities 3-0 in the final.
The Beach Cities finalists, captained by Vicky Trinh and playing out of the Billie Jean King Tennis Center, went 3-0 in flighted play prior to the championship match, sweeping teams from San Diego, Ventura County, and San Gabriel Valley.
MIXED 55 & OVER
MIXED 6.0 – San Gabriel Valley’s “Dare Doubles,” captained by Shirley Flores and based out of Whittier Narrows Tennis Center, claimed the Mixed 6.0 title after going undefeated in round-robin play. SGV posted 2-1 wins over another SGV team and San Fernando Valley, along with a 3-0 sweep of Coachella Valley.
The finalists, also from SGV, the “Racketeers,” captained by Juan Ramirez and playing out of Whittier Narrows, defeated San Fernando Valley and Coachella Valley before falling to the champions.
MIXED 7.0 – Beach Cities broke through in the Mixed 7.0 division, with the “Alta Vista” squad surviving a challenging playoff path to secure the title. Captained by Maurice Kogon and Linda Snyder and playing out of Alta Vista Racquet Center, BC went 3-0 in unflighted play, defeating San Fernando Valley and San Diego 2-1 and sweeping Orange County 3-0.
Advancing to the playoffs on individual wins, “Alta Vista” swept OC again in the semifinals before edging unbeaten San Gabriel Valley 2-1 in the final. The SGV finalists, the “Dare Doubles,” captained by Peter Yen and Cara Hofstad, had gone unbeaten prior to the championship match.
MIXED 8.0 – Orange County continued its strong showing across both weekends, adding the Mixed 8.0 crown behind another composed and convincing team performance. Frank Tran once again led the charge, with his “Costa Mesa Tennis Center” team going 3-0 in unflighted play, sweeping San Gabriel Valley and San Diego North County and defeating San Diego 2-1.
Advancing as the only unbeaten team, OC swept Beach Cities 3-0 in the final. The BC finalists, captained by Mary Kay Dyes and Koichi Ishihara and playing out of West End Tennis & Health Club, went 2-1 prior to the final.
MIXED 9.0 – Orange County put an exclamation point on the two-weekend event, as the “Newport Beach Tennis Club” squad closed out Sectionals by capturing the Mixed 9.0 championship. Ron Schoenbaum’s team went undefeated in round-robin play, sweeping San Diego and another OC team, while also defeating San Diego North County 2-1.
The finalists from the Racquet Club of Irvine, captained by Deidre Beckley and Mykael Tran, finished 2-1, with their lone loss coming against the champions.
