Rancho Santa Fe native Taylor Fritz has been named to the USA Davis Cup Team for the upcoming second-round qualifying competition taking place on September 12 and 13 at the Delray Beach Tennis Center, the same venue where Fritz captured back-to-back ATP 250 titles in 2023 and 2024, winning both tournaments without dropping a set.
Currently the top-ranked American man at No. 4 in the world, Fritz has been a steady force for U.S. men’s tennis. He has previously represented the United States in ten Davis Cup ties, posting a 7-3 singles record since his debut in 2019, bringing a mix of experience, leadership, and championship-level talent to the international stage. Fritz’s career continues to reach new milestones, most recently, he became the first American man to reach the quarterfinals at all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, an achievement that underscores his consistency and skill against the very best players in the world.
Fritz’s Southern California roots run deep. A product of San Diego and the SoCal tennis scene, he joins a new generation of American men making waves on the global tour. The team will be captained by Camarillo native Bob Bryan, whose experience and energy continue to guide the U.S. squad. Now in his third year at the helm, Bryan will have flexibility with singles and doubles combinations, and the option to add a fifth roster member if needed.
Anchoring a star-studded U.S. squad, Fritz will be joined by Florida’s Ben Shelton, ranked No. 6 in the world, fresh off his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the Canada Open and making just his second Davis Cup appearance; Maryland’s Frances Tiafoe, currently No. 14 in singles and competing in his sixth Davis Cup tie; and North Carolina’s Tommy Paul, ranked No. 16, who has played in 10 Davis Cups. With four Americans ranked in the Top 20 of the ATP rankings and consistently competing for titles on the world stage, U.S. men’s tennis is thriving at an unprecedented level, ready to take on a strong Czech team capable of delivering on hard courts, led by singles world No. 19 and Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik, No. 24 Tomas Machac, No. 26 Jiri Lehecka, doubles No. 36 Adam Pavlasek, and 19-year-old Petr Brunclik.
The U.S. team carried strong momentum from the first round of Davis Cup qualifying, sweeping Chinese Taipei 4-0. Southern California was prominently represented, with Thousand Oaks and former UCLA Bruin Marcos Giron, Aliso Viejo’s Alex Michelsen, and UCLA’s Mackenzie ‘Mackie’ McDonald all contributing to the victory, while Michelsen and Giron made their Davis Cup debuts.
The two-day competition follows a best-of-five format, beginning with two singles matches Friday, September 12, at 6 p.m., followed by a doubles match and two more singles matches on Saturday, September 13, starting at 2 p.m. The first nation to win three matches will advance to the Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna, Italy, from November 18-23. Tennis Channel will provide live U.S. coverage.
Delray Beach has historically provided a home-court advantage for Team USA, with the U.S. Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup teams undefeated in five appearances at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. The last Davis Cup match in Delray saw Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, and Bob and Mike Bryan defeat Sweden in 2004, while the U.S. Billie Jean King Cup team swept Austria in 2023 behind local star Coco Gauff.
Fritz’s selection underscores his ongoing role as a leader for U.S. men’s tennis and gives Southern California fans another reason to rally behind Team USA. With a deep roster, historic achievements, and American men performing at a peak level, the team looks poised to make a serious run at the Davis Cup and continue building momentum on the world stage.
