The final Adult Sectionals weekend before the 2025 USTA League National Championships brought an electric close to the season as Mixed 40 & Over teams took the court from Friday, September 26 through Sunday, September 28. Over 450 of Southern California’s top League players competed at the 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0 levels across North Ranch Country Club, Sunset Hills Country Club, and Rancho Madera Park.

Friday and Saturday’s qualifying rounds set the stage for a thrilling Championship Sunday. Teams battled not only for Sectionals titles but also for spots at the 2025 USTA League National Championships, held October 10 through November 9 in Orlando, San Diego, Scottsdale, and Surprise.

Divisions advanced differently: 6.0 and 9.0 played three unflighted matches, with the top two reaching the final; 7.0 sent the top four from unflighted play to the semifinals; and 8.0 featured three flights, with winners and the best runner-up advancing to the semis. Playoffs then determined the Sectional champions.

The Mixed 40 & Over National Championships for all four levels will take place November 7-9 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.

Mixed 6.0

Third time was the charm for Caroline Tran, who captured her first Sectionals title of the year after reaching three finals in four events. Tran competed across Mixed 18 & Over, Adult 40 & Over, Adult 18 & Over, and Mixed 40 & Over Sectionals this season.

At Mixed 40 & Over Sectionals, Tran led the “San Fernando Valley Aceholes” from Scholl Canyon Golf and Tennis alongside co-captain Amy Tsai. The team went undefeated in unflighted play, earning wins over squads from Los Angeles, San Gabriel Valley, and Orange County to secure a spot in the final.

In the championship, the Aceholes faced the “San Gabriel Valley Dare Doubles” from Whittier Narrows Tennis Center, captained by Manoj Parmar and Shirley Flores. After a hard-fought match, Tran’s team clinched two out of three lines to claim the Sectionals crown.

Mixed 7.0

San Gabriel Valley’s Colin Tang is no stranger to League Sectionals or Nationals. Earlier this year at Mixed 18 & Over Sectionals, he captained three of the five teams that advanced to Nationals. He showcased his winning experience again at Mixed 40 & Over Sectionals, guiding the “San Gabriel Valley Racketeers” from Arroyo High School alongside co-captain Laurie Manley. The duo previously led the Mixed 40 & Over 8.0 team to victory at the 2024 Sectionals, highlighting their consistency and skill on the court.

The Racketeers entered Sectionals on a hot streak, having gone 8-0 in local San Gabriel Valley leagues. In the semifinals at Sectionals, they swept all three lines against the 2024 finalists from San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club, captained by Michelle Adams and Ryan Adams. On the other side of the draw, Beach Cities’ team from Manhattan Country Club, captained by Leslie Lancry and Anne Lee, defeated “LA Strings Attached” from Cheviot Hills Tennis Center, captained by Justine Lassoff, 2-1.

In the final, the Racketeers secured the championship by taking two of three lines against Beach Cities.

Mixed 8.0

Orange County captured their 12th Sectionals title of the season as the Orange County Boot Camp” from Costa Mesa Tennis Center, led by Frank Tran and co-captain Hanh Pham. Tran’s Mixed 40 & Over 8.0 team also won the National Championships in 2023.

Boot Camp entered Sectionals undefeated in local Orange County leagues (13-0). In the Sectionals semifinals, they defeated “San Gabriel Valley Dare Doubles,” led by Jane Wang and Khin Aye, and San Diego’s “SD ECCTA” team from East County Community Tennis Association, captained by Wender Hwang and Jed Galan, who had previously beaten Ventura’s “NR Mixed Madness” team, led by Beth and Bob Benton.

In the championship, Boot Camp swept all three matches against San Diego to claim the title.

Mixed 9.0

San Gabriel Valley continued their dominance, capturing their second championship of the weekend and 13th overall of the season. Colin Tang led the “San Gabriel Valley Wild Cards” from Arroyo High School, this time with co-captain Mandi Collier.

In qualifying, the Wild Cards defeated “SD Mtn View” led by Jamie Armstrong and BC MiraCosta” captained by Julie Austin and Sejal Penkar, while falling 1-2 to Ventura’s “V-WAC 99,” led by David Hoffman. In the final, they defeated Orange County’s OC NBTC” from Newport Beach Tennis Club, captained by Ron Schoenbaum, who had won eight of nine matches heading into the playoffs.

San Diego’s “SD Mountain View” 9.0 team from Mountain View Sports & Racquet Club captured the ninth Spirit Award of the season, earning recognition as the team that showcased the most SoCal spirit during the event.
